Materials

Teak wood – Teak wood is loved for its honey-golden brown colour. Its natural oil content protects it from harsh weather conditions, salt, sun damage, and insects. The durability and beautiful colouring of teak wood make it one of the most prized and expensive types of wood.

Mindi wood – The colour of mindi wood shifts gradually from a light yellow-brown hue to a dark brown the further one gets into its heartwood. Its natural fungi-resistant characteristics and straight and tight grain texture make it durable yet easy to work with, and therefore loved by all woodworkers.

Suar wood – Suar wood is sought out for its versatility and durability. It is less prone to cracks and warping due to its criss-cross wood grains that help strengthen the wood. The light-yellow sapwood and rich dark chocolate-brown heartwood colour combined with the criss-cross nature of the grains bring about interesting designs and patterns on the wood.

Acacia wood – Acacia wood core comes in a bold reddish-brown colour with dark veins, while the sapwood can be a yellowish-brown hue. The wood has a hard density and is highly durable in different climates, yet it is pleasant to work with.

Metal – We include metal elements in some of our collections. The metal we use is sourced locally and meets international standards. Our metal department works with this material to create a perfect balance of metal-on-wood combinations that stretches the imagination.

Rattan – The traditional art of rattan weaving is incorporated into some of our collections. We use a variety of kinds of rattan, all of which are sourced locally and are FSC certified. This material’s durability, flexibility and lightweight nature allows our team to create countless patterns and designs. The light golden colour of rattan adds a natural and tropical essence to your spaces.

Fabrics – We use countless types of fabrics and canvas that are specific to your requirements. Indoor, outdoor, stain-proof… we have it all! The endless uses of fabrics in furniture allows for the creation of unique pieces, some of which you may not expect.

Outdoor materials – We have a selection of synthetic cords and rattan that are excellent for outdoor furniture, as they are all weatherproof and can stand the test of nature.

Stone & Ceramic – Our experience with stone and ceramic, allows our manufacturing department to create the perfect balance and combination in all our pieces.

Loom paper cord – Our loom paper cord at Tabu is sourced locally and is FSC certified. Our team hand weaves the loom to our products manually. Loom paper cord is comfortable, resistant, and easy to work with to create endless patterns. This material can last for many years if well taken care of, and can always be replaced or repaired by a skilled weaver if necessary.

Leather – All our leather is locally sourced from several small, family-owned tanneries in Java. Our tannery’s artisans use vegetable-tanned processes, which have a much lower environmental impact than more commonly used chrome-based methods.
